A Tribute to Retiring Editor Kirk S. Rense

By Mosier, Robert*

Kirk Rense has served as editor of Receivership News since the new and improved trade journal made its debut in 2002, or 10 years ago. During his tenure as editor, he produced 32 issues, or an average of 3.5 per year, 616 pages of copy, and oversaw 75 different articles on receivership and bankruptcy, including 22 profiles. These are just a few of the statistics that Kirk has accomplished during this most impressive 10 year run. In mid September 2011, Kirk decided to step down as editor. He cited at least two goals as he did this: – (1) to allow new blood with new enthusiasm to step in and take over – with the hope of adding new wind to RN’s sails, and (2) to allow Kirk the freedom to be a writer of articles rather than just edit them – Kirk now perceives a new opportunity to express himself on the issues that he held back on while in the controlling role of editor.

In addition to being one of the State’s leading authorities on Receiverships, Kirk is a lawyer (USC Law School Graduate). The focus of his practice is representing receivers and trustees in insolvency matters. Prior to becoming a lawyer, he was busy honing his skills as an editor – he started his career as a journalist reporting the news for one of LA’s evening papers and later he became editor of Hughes News, the internal newsletter for Hughes Aircraft Corporate. All of this was before he decided in mid life to return to law school for a new degree. You can easily conclude that Kirk’s role as editor of Receivership News was a nice extension of his editing skills. Kirk’s undergraduate degree is in journalism from Cal State LA.

On the personal side, Kirk is married to Louise whom he met during his service as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy (there are rumors that Louise, also in the Navy, outranked Kirk). The Rense family lives in South Orange County; Kirk and Louise have two children – a son Randy who is in college at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma and daughter Robin who is a sophomore in high school and enjoys acting. Notably, being an editor may run in Kirk’s family – his stepmom, Page Rense, was the long-time editor of Architectural Digest. For those of us who work closely with Kirk, he is the beneficiary of a high IQ that allows him to store volumes of data with nearly instant recall. He was once a candidate to appear on Trivial Pursuit – Kirk’s close associates are frequently exposed to this distractive attribute. Kirk is an art enthusiast and enjoys spending time in Southern California’s museums.

At Loyola IV in January 2011, the California Receivers Forum honored Kirk with the Presentation of the Robert C. Warren Memorial Award honoring Excellence in Service and Vision within the Receivership community. Kirk is the third recipient of this coveted and top award of the Receivers Forum since it was first awarded in 2004. It was presented by receiver and lawyer, Edythe L. Bronston, who was the second recipient after her valiant efforts to coordinate Loyola I and II. Adding to the breadth and scope of this award, the CRF Board of Directors wishes to acknowledge and thank Kirk for his years of service and major contribution to the organization and issue this very public and formal “Thank you; Job well done!”
