Clay Dunning's 4,000 Mile Bicycle Ride

By Mirman, Alan*

Now for a new feature in HITH: I know (or at least hope) that CRF members have interesting hobbies. In each issue, I’d like to feature a blurb on a recent adventure by one of our members. Sort of a “What I Did Last Summer” item. The inspiration comes from Bay Area Chapter VP and long-time receiver, Clay Dunning, who wrote me about his 4,000 Mile Bike Ride Across America.

Clay cycled from San Francisco, CA to Virginia Beach, VA. His group of 20 cyclists crossed the Sierra-Nevada Mountains at 8,573’ Carson Pass and the Rocky Mountains at 11,512’ Monarch Pass with plenty of other bumps along the way, not the least of which were the Appalachian Mountains in the Eastern US. The 70 day coast-to-coast trip included 60 days of pedaling, 7 days of rest, a day to meet fellow cyclists at the beginning and 2 days to recuperate at the end. 1,440,000 pedal strokes, but who’s counting. Clay waxed poetic about the trip highlighting the beauty of San Francisco Bay, the magnificence of the Sierra-Nevada Mountains, the vastness of the deserts of Nevada, the lunar-like terrain of Utah’s famous canyons, the rugged Rocky Mountains of Colorado, the prairie land of Kansas and Missouri, and the southern hospitality of Kentucky and Virginia. He had planned to do the trip long ago, but work always got in the way. He signed up with Bicycle Adventure Club, which organizes rides around the world and with which he cycled in Tuscany last fall and will cycle with again this spring in Provence.

Thanks Clay. Who else will step forward with a story of their adventure or hobby?
